The Baseball Project

Quote: "DL Blues laments typical game-caused injuries, such as Washington Nationals pitcher Strasburg's unfortunate need for Tommy John surgery. McCaughey sprinkles in mentions of freak accidents suffered by Los Angeles Angels first baseman Morales, who broke his left leg when he slipped on home plate while celebrating his game-winning grand slam in May, and Marlins outfielder Coghlan, who tore the meniscus in his left knee while nailing a teammate in the face with a shaving cream pie to celebrate a winning hit in July."

Medicine Show Re-Release

The 2010 version of "Medicine Show" available now!

After a 20-year wait, the Dream Syndicate's 2nd album "Medicine Show" finally returns to CD and this new version is an update worthy of the wait.

The 2010 digipack version of the 1984 classic features a sparkling, powerful sound, mastered from the original tapes as well as an expanded booklet with revelatory liner notes by David Fricke never seen before photos from the archives of Laura Levine.

And if that wasn't enough, this new version includes the entire "This Is Not The New Dream Syndicate.....Live" -including the lengthy workout of "John Coltrane Stereo Blues" which didn't make the cut on the original 1991 reissue.

But Steve, when are you going to feed your fandom with fresh news about Northern Aggression? With Panic of Girls being postponed indefinitely, it's the only earthshaking release I've got to look forward to this fall! Anticipation....

7.12.10: New York City

This is a story I wrote for ESPN to accompany the latest installation of the Broadside Ballads, one one-a-month series that we're doing for their website this year. Bear with me even if you don't care about baseball--you'll see by the end that it's a pretty universal story:

I remember when David Clyde made his debut at age 18 for the Texas Rangers back in 1973. I was pretty excited. After all, I was just 13 years old, not even old enough to drive, and here was a guy just five years older than me starting a major league baseball game. It was a big deal. He had gone straight from high school to the majors. And he won that first game. But he didn't win many more after that, victim of a questionable call to rush him along too quickly.

I'm not saying that...
